Sculpting BJD Head – Part 2

He’s not the most good looking fellow, but hey I’m having fun just learning something I’ve never done before so all is good 🙂

I try to keep the cheekbones fairly subtle because I’m not so fond on prominent cheekbones, I have no idea why that is…

Build that nose up a bit more and give his nose bridge a slight bump…

Okay these are not the final eyes. They look bad lol! They were just there because at this stage it is so hard to visualise the final look so I needed a bit of a visual guide.

I ended up scrapping the eyes & sanding the jaws more:

Oh I drew this vertical line connecting the left jaw point to the right, I find that it helps keep the symmetry while I work…

Checking the bottom…

Building the brow bone a bit more…

And the nose tip needs more defining…

I pop him back on the torso to check for proportion…

Okay so now I need to make some ears. First I draw a basic shape of where it would be:

Then I take a ball of clay, roll it flat and cut it in the middle into two equal halves. Each of these halves will be shaped into an ear on the head:

I have this tool to carve or scoop out excess clay. It’s soo useful! I need a few more of these..

I stuck the bit of half moon clay on the head and started to shape the ear. It’s interesting how actually the ear can be broken down and simplified into two basic shape of “Y” branches and sort of circle each other like a Yin-Yang symbol…this makes it easier for me to sculpt once I understood this.

I better make more of the mouth shape…

jemse---my-first-doll-head-making-progress-diary-part-3_31571086014_o

jemse---my-first-doll-head-making-progress-diary-part-3_31602573383_o

Oh he’s starting to look like somebody and not just a lump of clay!

jemse---my-first-doll-head-making-progress-diary-part-3_31602561133_o

jemse---my-first-doll-head-making-progress-diary-part-3_32293338321_o

In the meantime… the ear has dried but I hate the shape, what a mess!

jemse---my-first-doll-head-making-progress-diary-part-3_31571089254_o

So I cut it off and we’ll start again…
